5 DAY CHALLENGE: Styling the Hardest Colors in Your Closet

A recap of a 5 day challenge I hosted over on Instagram: pick at least 3 colors that are hard for you to style and challenge yourself to wear them for 5 days!

Follow along on Instagram for daily coverage on Color Month.

Below are my difficult colors and color combinations I tried:

DAY 1: ELECTRIC PURPLE

I don’t buy a lot of this color but evidently when I do, I buy it in the loudest items possible. This sweater was bound to be mine from the first time I saw it. Once I received it, I found I only ever wore it with jeans. Not only was a it a very bold sweater, the color was always difficult for me to style. I’m happy with the way this look turned out! Business casual meets Barney in Carnival in Rio de Janeiro.

DAY 2: LILAC + CHERRY RED

I've never been able to style purple and red together. Instantly, this color combo makes me think of Red Hat Society. Those ladies are chic, don’t get me wrong, just not the #vibe I'm after. I saw a few images on Pinterest of a lighter purple paired with red that really jumped out at me so I decided it give it a try. I recently thrifted a 100% cashmere (!!!) sweater from Goodwill that I thought would look chic with my trusty red vinyl pants… and voila! A new me was born.

DAY 3: LIME GREEN

I thrifted this Ralph Lauren lime green stripe button down over the summer thinking: Hey, I love brights—this is perfect. Nope. Hasn't been touched since. I think it might’ve still had the thrift tag on before I styled it. This Rent the Runway duster blazer and trouser set had just come in when I had the idea of playing with the idea of a bright menswear / business casual look. Plus, it gave me the opportunity to dust off these neon sandals that have also rarely seen the sidewalk!

DAY 4: COBALT BLUE

Blue is hard for me to style. I just tend to wear it head to toe and have trouble pairing it with other colors. Luckily I had this multi-colored blouse that allowed me to pair cobalt + burgundy + navy + black together—certainly a new combination for me!

DAY 5: FUSING TWO HARD TO STYLE COLORS TOGETHER!

ALMOST head to toe shades of blue if not for this berry purple color. I thrifted that Zara crop top and found those matching heels at Off Broadway for $11! Overall, a cooler colored look, which isn’t normally my thing. I’m happy I did this challenge to help push me out of my comfort zone and always stay creative!
